The Impact of Package Leakage on Supply Chains

For food manufacturers, beverage brands, and pet care distributors, packaging leakage is one of the most costly quality failures in global logistics. A single ruptured bag inside a shipping container can compromise entire pallets, degrade product shelf life, and lead to customer chargebacks.

Preventing package leakage requires an understanding of polymer heat-sealing mechanics, thermal bonding parameters, and rigorous factory testing protocols.

The Physical Science of Heat Sealing

Flexible packaging pouches—including Stand-Up Pouches, Spout Pouches, and Flat Bottom Pouches—rely on an inner heat-sealable layer (typically Low-Density Polyethylene [LDPE] or Cast Polypropylene [CPP]) that melts and fuses together under applied heat, pressure, and dwell time.

  • Optimal Heat-Sealing Window: If the sealing temperature is too low, the inner polymer layers fail to interdiffusion, resulting in micro-channel leaks. If the temperature is too high, the polymer layer degrades, thinning the seal seam and reducing impact resistance.

  • Contamination-Resilient Seal Layers: For powders (such as protein powders or flour) and oily liquid products (sauces and dressings), specialized inner sealants are engineered to seal directly through product dust or residual oils without compromising bond strength.

Key Laboratory Leakage and Seal Integrity Tests

To ensure zero failure rates during high-speed automated packing on Roll Film machines or long-distance ocean transit, packaging films undergo standardized quality testing:

  • Seal Strength Test (ASTM F88): Quantifies the peak force required to pull apart a heat-sealed seam, ensuring the pouch can withstand internal pressure during handling.

  • Burst Pressure Test (ASTM F2054): Pressurizes the pouch with air until it expands to evaluate the weakest structural points across side seals and bottom gussets.

  • Bubble Emission Test (ASTM F2096): Submerges a pressurized pouch underwater to visually detect microscopic pinholes or channel leaks along zipper joints and spout fitments.

  • Drop and Vibration Resistance: Simulates drop impacts from standard pallet heights to ensure heavy fill weights (such as 5 kg to 15 kg pet kibble bags) do not rupture during distribution.

Compliance with International Food Safety Regulations

In addition to mechanical durability, all inner sealant layers used for direct food or beverage contact must comply with international material safety frameworks, such as the U.S. FDA Food Contact Packaging Regulations, verifying zero toxic migration under heat-sealing temperatures.

CERTIFIED FOOD CONTACT SAFETY

Designed for direct food contact, our inner sealing film complies with international FDA standards without toxic release under heat.
